Harlem, New York (CNN) — Every 4 years during a Winter Olympics, millions of people turn armchair experts on figure skating: quadruple jumps and multiple spins, genocide spirals and triple Salchows.
And like clockwork, many rinks opposite a United States see a swell in enrollment for figure skating lessons desirous by Olympic fever. Yet any week in Harlem, Sharon Cohen helps some-more than 170 girls strike a ice and movement their approach to new heights.

Since 1997, Cohen’s nonprofit, Figure Skating in Harlem, has supposing skating apparatus and instruction, preparation and life skills classes to some-more than 700 girls from low-income communities.
Lessons for life
Each week, a girls attend in dual 90-minute organisation skating classes orderly by age and ability level. They have fun, get fit and stay protected after school, and Cohen believes a lessons they’re training can final a lifetime.
“They benefit discipline, perseverance. They tumble down, and they get behind up,” pronounced Cohen, 48 “And they learn they can do that in anything.”

Success over skating

“We wish girls to trust and know they can be anything they wish to be if they put their hearts and minds to it,” Cohen said.

Students compensate $350 a year to attend in Cohen’s program. But with adult to 100 girls on a watchful list, Cohen says this helps safeguard that a girls are committed to it. One-third of a students get grant assistance, and Cohen says that no one is ever incited divided since she can't pay.
Breaking barriers
The organisation recently began competing in group synchronized skating competitions via a Northeast.
“They’re adult opposite teams (where) girls movement each day and have private lessons,” Cohen said. “So a fact that they’re even in row is an extraordinary achievement.”
It’s tough work — since of singular ice time, a group’s comparison group practices during 6 a.m. on Sundays — though training as a group gives a girls profitable experience. And their participation in competitions adds a sip of farrago to a sport.
“They’re a usually all-minority — Latino, African-American — group out there,” Cohen said. “They’re unequivocally proud, and they’re unequivocally well-received.”
Cohen hopes to one day build an ice skating preparation core in Harlem so that some-more girls can participate. She’s also operative to move her module to underserved communities in Chicago, Detroit and Los Angeles.
“When kids are given a vacant piece of ice, they can grow and grasp their personal best,” Cohen said. “That’s what this is about — giving them a event to find out what they’re done of.”
